This course will utilize the basic skills that lay the foundation for all future learning and success in terms of careers and technology; those skills include reading, math, science, problem solving, analytical thinking, effective communication, and the ability to work well with others. In addition, this course will provide each student with an opportunity to learn important skills in keyboarding; college and careers; and Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Excel.

- Introduction to Career and Technology Education
Students will understand that following classroom procedures is an integral part of their education experience. Students will also identify and apply classroom rules and procedures. They will understand that acceptable technology etiquette is essential to respectful social interactions and good citizenship, and that ethical use of technology is necessary to ensure safety, privacy and legal issues. Students will also find that appropriate terminology, proper keyboarding, computer operations and applications assist to gain confidence in the use of technology.

Using proper keyboarding techniques, optimal posture and correct hand placement (e.g., continue appropriate finger reaches and building speed) is essential to each student's future success in using technology.
- Consumer DecisionsIndividual and families need to make consumer decisions due to the numerous products/services on the market, multiple advertising techniques, and the need to make responsible financial management decisions. Accessing and assessing consumer information, comparing and evaluating products and services, provides basis for making effective consumer decisions. Consumer decisions influence the use of resources and the impact they have on the community and environment.
- Inidividual Learning Plan
Students across Kentucky are required to complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP). The Career Cruising ILP Tool is designed to help students bring together their academic achievements, extracurricular experiences, and career and education exploration activities. This enables the student, parents or guardians, teachers, and counselors to work together to develop a course of study that meets the student's needs and goals.
- Financial Literacy
Financial literacy provides knowledge so that students are responsible for their personal economic wellbeing. As consumers, individuals need economic knowledge as a base for making financial decisions impacting short and long term goals throughout one’s lifetime. Financial literacy will empower students by providing them with the skills and awareness needed to establish a foundation for a future of financial responsibility and economic independence.
